Introduction
Our department aims to train students to become professional environmental engineers. Diplomas will be conferred on the students who complete courses of study in the areas of:
- environmental science
- environmental engineering
- ecological engineering
- interdisciplinary innovative green technology
Students receive practical training in the skills of:
- environmental engineering with environmental quality monitoring
- water supply engineering
- wastewater treatment engineering
- solid waste treatment engineering
- air pollution control engineering
- planning, design and operation of soil/groundwater remediation
The development of learning skills will not only address the problems of environmental pollution, but also assist students to pursue their career mission in creating a sustainable environment. In order to provide a holistic education, we also offer courses focusing on concern for humanity, professional ethics, and morality. In recognition of our academic and educational achievements over the years, we have recently been awarded the highest level of departmental evaluation by the Ministry of Education. In addition, the department has been recognized and certificated by the Chinese Society for Engineering Education (IEET) for excellence in engineering and technology education. These honors indicate that the educational outcomes and teaching quality of our department have reached an international standard.
Teaching and Learning
Our department implements a school-based curriculum, coordinating the workplace skills of our graduating students with the developmental needs of the domestic environmental protection industry. In keeping with industry requirements for personnel licensing and accreditation, our program is designed to provide theoretical and practical instruction. Our required courses provide a foundation in the theory and practice of engineering, while our elective courses focus on three categories of expertise:
- monitoring and analysis of environmental quality
- operation and maintenance of environmental engineering
- environmental sustainability technology and its application
Introduction
Our department established the first university program in occupational safety and health in Taiwan, with the aim of training professional safety and health management staff for domestic industries and services. Through our highly qualified staff and excellent facilities, we hope graduates from our programs can contribute to improvements in working environments and reductions in workplace injuries in Taiwan. At present we are the only authorized testing institution for occupational safety and health in central and southern Taiwan, and our certified training courses in occupational safety and health are endorsed by the Council of Labor Affairs. In addition to training undergraduates, we promote the re-education of in-service professionals, helping them to understand the importance of industrial safety and health, and offering guidance in managing relationships between workers and employers. We also cooperate closely with industry, in order to understand current health and safety requirements, and assist in the development of equipment and programs in such fields as occupational accident prevention, working environment appraisal, fire fighting, and occupational disease prevention.
Teaching and Learning
Our educational goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skill to become professional occupational safety and health managers. We offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The bachelor’s degree curriculum is focused on theory and practice of occupational safety and health recognition, evaluation, and control. As for the master program, we provide students with a broad background in the fields of hazard assessment, risk management, and disaster reduction technology. We hope to produce students who have a strong foundation in theoretical knowledge and its practical application in workplaces, as well as a highly cultivated sense of workplace ethics.
Introduction
Food safety is an issue of common concern around the world, and particularly so in Taiwan, after a series of food-contamination scandals in recent years shook the public’s confidence in food safety. In 2011, the National Conference on Food Safety affirmed the urgency and importance of hiring qualified "food technicians" in food-factory management. Since 2012, each individual company in the food industry has been required to employ food technologists to implement food-safety control systems. As a result, food technician certificates and HACCP accreditation have become highly sought after in industry. In 2014, the "Food Safety and Health Management Act" revised regulations on “Personnel and Management Practices for Food Industry Professionals or Technicians with Certificates." This further intensified demand for professional technicians competent in food manufacturing, development, testing, and safety, as well as quality- assurance management.
Our department was founded in 1980 as a five-year vocational program, with the current four-year bachelor’s program being added in 2000. We were renamed the Department of Food Science and Technology in 2003, thus commencing our mission of becoming a leading trainer of food technologists in Taiwan
Teaching and Learning
The goal of our department is to cultivate professional technical personnel for the food industry. To achieve this aim, our curriculum is designed to assist students to meet requirements to become certified food technicians. The courses are organized into seven fields, including food and nutrition, food processing, food analysis, food hygiene, food chemistry, food microbiology and food engineering.
We offer modules in food security and development and manufacturing. The first is designed to strengthen students’ skills in food inspection and analysis, while the latter is concerned with research and development, manufacturing, marketing, planning and entrepreneurship. Our students also participate in placement programs hosted by the Ministry of Labor, such as the “Food Network Entrepreneurship Program,” the “Professionals for the Organic and Health Foods Industry Program”.
Introduction
Founded in 1976, our department aims to train specialists in pharmaceutical-related chemical technology. In recent years, with global advancements in the biotech-pharmaceutical industry, and the local demand for pharmaceutical professionals, our research focus and range of teaching activities have broadened from fundamental analysis technology to drug synthesis, and natural herbal medicine synthesis. In addition to carrying out basic research, we have promoted cooperation with businesses in the medicinal chemistry industry, in order to ensure our students possess the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in a modern health care system.
Teaching and Learning
The objectives of our curriculum are to provide students with professional training in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and instrumental analysis based on solid chemistry knowledge, so as to enable our students to utilize their knowledge in biotech cosmeceutical production and analysis. Our teaching and learning focuses on practical and specialized skills, including lab sessions, projects, professional co-teaching, instrument operation certification, interdisciplinary programs, employment programs, and internship programs. The emphasis of theoretical knowledge combined with practical skills allows students to put theory into practice, and thus develop stronger competitiveness in the employment market and a greater variety of career opportunities.
